Try an Oil Mask
Oil can help soothe your dry scalp and tame frizzy hair at the same time. Just stick to small amounts to prevent greasiness and residue. Follow these steps to try an at-home oil mask:
- Massage up to 2 tablespoons of olive oil or coconut oil into your scalp to introduce some much-needed moisture.
- Let it sit for at least a few minutes.
- Thoroughly rinse your hair and scalp.
If your scalp is severely dry, you can even try leaving the oil on your scalp all night. Cover your hair and scalp with a plastic shower cap or cling wrap to stop the oil from getting on your bed and help seal in moisture.
Treat Your Scalp with Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a common home remedy for itchy, dry scalps — and it’s safe for frequent use. Follow these steps:
- Mix one part apple cider vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. If your scalp is very irritated, add a bit more water for comfort.

If you don’t have apple cider vinegar, you can also use freshly squeezed lemon juice the same way. Remember that these remedies may lighten your hair slightly if you use them frequently. You can also massage aloe vera into the scalp to help relieve itchiness.
