3 Steps to Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

May 7th 2016

Losing weight is one of the most key things you can do to help prevent Type 2 diabetes. Moving more and changing your diet are both key elements of this necessary weight loss. These lifestyle changes can start off gradually, but over time, you are likely to find them making a big difference in how you feel and how your body regulates blood sugar.

Change Your Diet

Being overweight or obese is the number one predictive factor for Type 2 diabetes. Even losing 5 to 7 percent of your body weight has been shown to have a significantly lower effect in the chances of contracting diabetes. A low-fat, high-fiber diet is key to preventing the disease. Counting fat grams, as well as calories, can help you be aware of what you're eating and keep you on the right track. High-fiber foods improve your body's ability to regulate its blood sugar and help you feel full so that you eat less. Whole grains, in particular, have a positive effect on the body's ability to maintain healthy blood sugar levels; try to make half the grains you eat in any given day whole grains.

Move Your Body

Getting as little as 30 minutes of mild exercise five days a week can help in preventing Type 2 diabetes. It's not necessary to block out 30 consecutive minutes to get the exercise you need
