10 Worst Vegas Mistakes That Affect Your Health
Flashing lights, exciting nightlife, 24-hour recreation and limitless activities are just a few of the reasons why Las Vegas, Nevada is such a popular destination spot. With a buzz and energy to get people charged for a weekend of fun, it's very easy to overlook the possible dangers that accompany a lifestyle of reckless abandonment. Before you even leave your hotel room to experience the time of your life, think about these 10 worst Vegas mistakes that can affect your health (in no particular order):
1. Skipping Out On Sleep
New York City holds the title of "The City that Never Sleeps," perhaps because Las Vegas already has been given the moniker, "Sin City." However, Vegas can equally share the title of its East Coast counterpart, with the lack of clocks, "last calls" and 24-hour establishments throughout the city. Getting caught up in the Vegas action can easily lead to plenty of sleepless nights as people cruise the strip for excitement and fun. Unfortunately, they are depriving themselves of much needed rest and increase the possible risk of high blood pressure, impaired driving and a likelihood of making bad food decisions and increased caloric intake that can lead to diabetes or obesity.
2. All-You-Can-Eat Buffets
The all-you-can-eat buffet is something that Las Vegas has become quite famous for. World class cuisine, extensive variety and limitless servings are enough to make almost anyone throw out their inhibitions and nutrition restrictions for a night of gluttony. Overeating, combined with the other health dangers of Las Vegas can mean a world of trouble for cardiovascular health and can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.
For some odd reason, many people who don't partake in smoking tend to have a few cigarettes and cigars when they are in Las Vegas. And for those who do smoke, they tend to smoke much more during their stay in Vegas. Since many Vegas establishments allow smoking inside, the risks associated with second-hand smoke are through the roof. The next time you are in Vegas, avoid smoking and the smokers themselves to reduce your risk of developing lung cancer, emphysema or bronchitis.
4. Starting a Gambling Addiction
Recreational gambling is one thing, but not knowing when to call it quits at the table games or slot machines is a type of addiction that can cause a lot of problems for people, and can even affect their physical health. Those who develop a gambling addiction in Vegas casinos are susceptible to anxiety or depression that can even lead to suicide.
5. Drinking Till You Can't Feel Anything
The rivers of alcohol flow excessively in Sin City. With complimentary drinks served around the clock and the fact that people are allowed to drink virtually anywhere are enough reasons to never stop consuming alcohol. Aside from the risk of liver disease and other harmful effects alcohol has on the body, Las Vegas visitors going heavy on the booze are also more likely to make poor decisions that can lead to drunk driving and virtually every other mistake on this Vegas list.
6. Getting a Piercing or Tattoo
While getting a tattoo or piercing isn't necessarily harmful to a person's health, getting one in Las Vegas seems to carry its own stigma. Perhaps it is because most people who choose to permanently alter their body in Las Vegas are doing so when their judgment and decision-making abilities are impaired (see mistake # 5). Such people are also unable to choose proper facilities for tattoos or piercings that conform to the required standards of hygiene and cleanliness. This can increase the risk of contracting diseases, such as:
7. Unprotected Sex
Whether by choice or because of impaired judgment caused by a particular substance, unprotected sex is one of the biggest mistakes people make during their stay in Vegas. To start with, there is a high likelihood of unplanned pregnancy to think about. Then of course there is the list of sexually transmitted diseases that accompany unprotected sex like:
8. Experimenting with Drugs
The heavy partying, lack of inhibitions, and the ease of obtaining illicit substances are common reasons that lead to drug experimenting on a Vegas vacation. Aside from developing a drug addiction and the numerous, harmful effects of illicit drugs, Las Vegas visitors guilty of this common mistake are also increasing their exposure to harmful diseases like AIDS.
9. Overexposure to the Sun
A common Las Vegas mistake that is harmful to a person's health is overexposure to the sun. While a walk down the Las Vegas Strip sounds like a fun activity amongst family and friends, the harmful rays of the sun can do a lot of damage to a person's skin. To avoid sunburn, Bowen's disease, skin cancer and other diseases and conditions related to overexposure to the sun, Vegas visitors should remember to always apply sunscreen before heading outsideand to wear protective clothing.
10. Not Hydrating Enough
The last, but not least important mistake people need to avoid when visiting Las Vegas is not staying hydrated. The high temperatures, exposure to the sun paired with alcohol consumption is a quick ticket to the emergency room if people aren't more careful. Always have a bottle of water on hand and replenish fluids regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty.
