10 Strange Weight Loss Tips That Actually Work

Losing weight can be a real challenge. Most people know that exercising and eating a healthy diet of fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean meats is important in order to lose weight. Sometimes even with a sensible weight loss plan, it can be difficult to meet your weight-loss goals. At times, incorporating some nontraditional weight-loss techniques may give you the edge you need. Below are 10 strange weight loss tips to get you started.

1. Sniff Peppermint Or Other Essential Oils

Aromatherapy, such as sniffing peppermint oil before meals, may help with weight loss in two ways. First, certain smells may help suppress the appetite and cause you to eat less. For example, in addition to peppermint, sniffing bitter orange may also help decrease appetite and reduce cravings, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternate Medicine (NCCAM). Aromatherapy may also change a person’s mood. Some people are emotional eaters and reach for food when they feel depressed, stressed or angry. Inhaling a fragrance which has a calming affect on the mind may help decrease emotional eating.

2. Spice Things Up

Dieting does not have to include eating flavorless food. Adding certain spices, such as turmeric and curry, to food may help increase metabolism, by raising the body temperature. To what extent metabolism is increased is not clear, but every little bit can help. In addition, adding spices to foods, may help you fill full faster and eat less.

3. Make Your Weight-Loss Mission Public

In addition to telling people in your life your weight-loss plan, setup a weight-loss blog or use other social media sites to update your followers on your weight-loss mission.Telling people in your life, such as friends, family and co-workers, about your weight-loss goals may help in a few ways. Announcing your goal may provide you with support, which gets you through some temptations. It will also hold you accountable and help you feel motivated and encouraged to continue.

4. Eat An Apple Before Lunch And Dinner

Apples are high in fiber, especially if you eat it with the skin on, and it helps you feel full. Eating one once or twice a day before meals can help you eat less. A study conducted at Pennsylvania State University found participants who ate an apple before meals typically consumed about 180 calories less at meals than those did not.

5. Surround Yourself In Blue During Meals

Use blue plates, napkins and tablecloths for meals. Colors can influence the way a person feels. For instance, the color blue is believed to suppress the appetite by making food seem less appealing. The opposite is thought to be true for colors such as red and yellow, which may stimulate the appetite.

6. Eat Your Favorite Food Once A Week

Trying to loss weight and keep it off can be especially difficult if you feel deprived. If you always swap something you love for a low calorie option, it may lead to binge eating later. Allow yourself one or two meals a week of your favorite food, even if it is high in calories. Part of weight control is keeping the weight off. Learning how to enjoy foods you love without gaining weight back is essential.

7. Think Of Something Gross

If you have trouble pushing your plate away, even if you’re full or can’t skip dessert, thinking of something disgusting may help. It may seem strange to think of something repulsive at meal times, but it can take your mind off food, and make it seem less appetizing. Whether you think of a rotten smell, a plate of bugs or public restrooms, it’s one way to stop eating.

8. Cut Your Food Into Several Small Pieces

Half the battle with weight-loss is tricking your mind into believing you’re full. Cutting your food into several small bites may make your plate look fuller. It may also take you longer to finish a meal, which also helps your brain get the signal you are full.

9. Put On A Pair Of Tight Pants At Dinner Time

It may seem silly, but changing into your tight jeans may help you eat less. It’s difficult to overeat if you feel uncomfortable. Putting on a pair of tight pants can not only help remind you of your weight loss goals, but it can physically make it uncomfortable to overeat.

10. Divide Your Food In Half When Dining Out

Dining out can be a challenge when trying to lose weight. Add in the fact that restaurant portions can be huge, and you may have a problem. Consider immediately asking for a doggie bag and bring half the food home. This will prevent you from continuing to nibble on your plate, even when you are full. Other options include sharing a meal with your dining companion or ordering off the children’s menu.
