5 Vegan Weight Loss Diets

People who follow the strict vegan diet and lifestyle generally lose weight after switching from a diet that included meat and other animal products. But that doesn't mean they are out of the market for weight loss diets. If you're a vegan looking to shave off a few pounds, but aren't sure which diets are suitable for you, here is a list of five vegan weight loss diets:

1. The Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse Diet, also known as the Lemon Cleanse Diet or Lemonade Diet, is a cleansing diet that consists of a lemon juice formula used for 10 days which can lead to a possible weight reduction of up to 20 pounds. The major components of the Master Cleanse are:

  • Organic lemons
  • Organic maple syrup
  • Organic cayenne pepper
  • Sea salt
  • Laxative tea
  • Natural herbal tea

Since these components are all vegan-friendly, the Master Cleanse is a suitable diet method for vegans who wish to lose weight. However, it should be noted that the Master Cleanse is meant to be used more as a detox cleanse, and not an actual diet. While weight loss is an included benefit of the Master Cleanse diet, the lost pounds are not considered permanent. A healthy, vegan diet plan along with regular exercise needs to be maintained after the Master Cleanse is complete if you wish to keep the lost pounds from coming back.

2. High Protein, Low Carb Vegan Diet

A high protein, low carb diet is typically associated with omnivorous eaters, who replace carbohydrates with high levels of protein from meat, eggs and dairy products. These types of diets are said to induce weight loss by forcing the body into a metabolic state known as ketosis, where the body uses its own fat as fuel instead of carbohydrates that are usually ingested.

While this sounds like a great weight loss diet, some vegans may wonder if it is possible to accomplish without eating any sort of meat or animal product. Vegan diets also tend to be heavy in carbohydrates like whole wheat grains and fruits. Since most of the foods in the vegan diet are lacking in protein, one must make use of the vegan protein sources available and increase the intake of such foods. Here is a list of protein rich foods vegans can eat for a high protein, low carb diet:

  • Tofu
  • Soybeans
  • Lentils
  • Tempeh
  • Peanuts
  • Wheat gluten

A high protein, low carb diet can be quite challenging for vegans. Considering that most vegan sources of protein contain more carbohydrates than protein sources for non-vegans, the weight loss effect of a high protein, low carb diet might seem less significant amongst vegans. However, the health risks commonly associated with high protein, low carb diets will be less evident among vegans as well.

3. Juice Diet

The Juice Diet is a diet that purely consists of various juices used for sustenance. The juice used in this particular diet primarily comes from fruits and vegetables making it a vegan-friendly diet. The diet induces weight loss by drastically cutting calories, causing the dieter to lose up four pounds per day. Fruits and vegetables that can be used for a vegan juice diet include:

4. Cabbage Soup Diet

Another diet vegans can use to help them lose weight is the Cabbage Soup Diet. With this particular diet, vegans can eat a cabbage soup concoction for an entire week to lose up to 10 pounds of weight. A rapid reduction in weight is induced by a low-calorie diet consisting only of the cabbage soup. The vegan-friendly ingredients that make up the soup are:

  • Cabbage
  • Celery
  • Green onions
  • Canned tomatoes
  • Onion powder or soup mix
  • Green peppers
  • Seasonings like salt, pepper and garlic powder

5. Fruit Diet

The Fruit Diet is another type of detox cleansing diet that has an added benefit of weight loss and is vegan friendly since it mainly consists of an all fruit diet. By eating fruit every two hours, you can lose up to 10 pounds in as little as three days with the Fruit Diet. Since fruits are high in fiber and water content, they contain fewer calories than other food. They are also made up of simple sugars as opposed to complex carbohydrates like rice, bread, pasta and potatoes, all of which are a part of a vegan diet. The diet is low in caloric intake at roughly 1,000 calories per day. The Fruit Diet is performed in two, easy steps:

  • Step 1: Drink vegan protein shakes for the first day of the protein diet.
  • Step 2: For the remaining two days of the diet, eat fresh fruits every two hours, and a dinner of raw vegetables plus a vegan protein shake.

Things to Note

  • Some of these diets are not meant to sustain prolonged periods of weight loss, and should be followed by healthy diet and exercising to maintain weight loss goals.
  • The rapid weight loss results of some of these diets is mainly water weight, and will return once the diet has ended unless you maintain your weight with proper diet and exercise.
  • Consult your physician before attempting some of these diets, as many of them include a sharp reduction in daily caloric intake, and can lead to certain health risks.
