3 Home Remedies for an Itchy Scalp

May 7th 2016

In many cases, itchy scalp symptoms can be easily relieved with natural home remedies. However, a chronically itchy scalp can indicate underlying medical problems such as hypothyroidism, allergies or parasitic infections, so it is always best to consult with a physician to make sure your condition is properly assessed before beginning any type of home treatment regimen.

Lemon Juice

Lemons contain natural antiseptic properties and vitamins that work to sooth itchy skin and encourage healing. To treat your itchy scalp, combine one part lemon juice with one part water and spray or apply it directly onto the scalp. Leave the solution on the scalp for five to ten minutes, then rinse your hair with warm water. The treatment can be repeated on a daily basis until the itching subsides.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is often utilized as a home remedy to treat itchy skin and sunburn due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. When scalp itches are caused by dandruff or dry skin, apple cider vinegar works well to balance scalp pH levels. This also helps to increase natural scalp moisture and eliminate dandruff. Mix together one part apple cider vinegar and one part water, and then apply the mixture to the scalp with a cotton ball or spray bottle. Leave the solution on for 15 minutes, then wash the hair with shampoo. For best results, the treatment should be repeated once a week until symptoms are relieved.

Olive Oil and Baking Soda

Olive oil is a natural moisturizer, and baking soda works to naturally exfoliate the skin. When applied to the scalp as a paste, these two ingredients soften the skin and slough away dry skin and dandruff. To treat scalp itchiness, massage a dime-sized drop of olive oil onto the scalp, then mix two teaspoons of baking soda with water to create a paste. Apply the baking soda mixture on top of the olive oil and allow the ingredients to set into the skin for 20 minutes. Rinse the scalp with water; apply this treatment whenever your scalp itches.

Itchy scalps occur for a variety of reasons; these range from dry skin and dandruff to chemical irritations caused by shampoos and hair dyes. Chronically itchy scalps can cause significant discomfort, especially when over-scratching leads to broken, inflamed skin, and this can even lead to infection. If you struggle with itchy scalp and are looking for a way to relieve your discomfort, the good news is that there are a variety of home remedies that can help to naturally soothe itchy skin and prevent future flare-ups.
