You probably consume food on a daily basis that is contributing to bad breath. Food particles break down around and in your teeth, which increases bacteria in your mouth. Food particles and bacteria remain in the mouth and on your teeth if you do not practice proper dental hygiene. Bacteria eventually forms plaque on the teeth that can cause bad breath and irritations to the gums. Your tongue, if not brushed, can also trap odor-producing bacteria. Brush your teeth and floss after each meal and use mouthwash to minimize odors that stem from your tongue. Regular cleanings by dentists are also necessary for proper dental hygiene. Dentists can evaluate the nature of your gums and teeth to determine if conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis are causing bad breath.


Some medications may be inadvertently causing your breath to produce a distasteful odor. Certain medications produce dry mouth, which contributes to bad breath while others break down in the body and release chemicals that expel from your breath. Check with your physician to evaluate if your medication is the cause of bad breath and determine alternative treatment options.
