7 Ways to Fight Bad Breath Naturally

If bad breath continues to be a problem, even when you have good oral hygiene, talk to your dentist or doctor. Either of these health professionals can suggest a diagnosis or course of treatment for bad breath once they find a cause.

Brush Regularly

Brush your teeth at least twice per day, or preferably after every meal. Brushing your teeth gets rid of any food particles in your mouth and rinses away debris that may stick to your teeth. Use a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. Replace your toothbrush every two to three months.

Floss Regularly

Dental floss removes food from between teeth where toothbrushes cannot reach. Floss at least once or twice per day, at least before you go to bed, to remove any remaining food and debris from between teeth. This prevents any bacteria from building up overnight in between teeth.

This dries out the mouth and prevents saliva from acting upon the soft tissues, which may cause bacteria to grow overnight.

Chew Sugarless Gum

Chew sugarless gum throughout the day to get more salivary action in your mouth. Saliva naturally cleanses your mouth by moving fluids in between teeth and over the tongue. Gum with sugar may worsen bad breath and increase the acid content of your mouth.

Chew on Herbs, Spices or Citrus

Several foods may help fight bacterial growth in your mouth. Small foods such as cloves, anise seeds and fennel seeds have antiseptic qualities that may kill bacteria in your mouth. Chew a handful of any of these three spices. Wash, rinse and chew lemon or orange rind for a minute. The citrus makes your salivary glands work and freshens your mouth with a strong, yet fruity, flavor. Fresh herbs such as parsley, basil, mint and cilantro neutralize odors thanks to the chlorophyll in the green plants, but also due to the unique flavors of each herb.

Homemade Mouthwash

Create a homemade mouthwash by mixing 1 teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of peppermint essential oil into 1 cup of water. The baking soda creates a basic pH level to fight acid and kill bacteria, while the peppermint oil also serves as an antimicrobial agent. This mixture yields several rinses, and swish with the mouthwash for 30 seconds and then spit out.
