Choose Sun Times Carefully
Avoiding sun exposure seems like a likely solution to sunburns, but you cannot realistically shut yourself off from the light of the day. Instead, stay out of the midday sun, which sends out the strongest rays of sunlight. Midday sun times are typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Find shade when venturing out during peak sun times of the day to protect your skin from sunburn.
Wear Protective Clothing
The clothing you choose to wear can help protect your skin from sunburns. Wear tightly woven clothing that is loose-fitting and covers your legs and arms. Opt for clothing made with sun-protective fabric and wear sunglasses with UV-ray protection. Adding a wide-brim hat that covers your scalp, eyes, ears and neck can also provide the shade your body needs when in the sunlight.
Sunscreen is a powerful substance to prevent burning, but people can still burn if the sunscreen is not reapplied, does not contain a high enough SPF or is not waterproof. Sweat and water from pools can quickly reduce the effectiveness of sunscreen. Choose a sunscreen with 30 SPF content or higher and reapply every two hours, especially when sweating or swimming. Find shade whenever possible and avoid extended time in the sun to prevent sunburns.
Build Your Body's Resistance
It is possible to double your protection from harmful sun rays by building an internal sunscreen within the body. Beneficial antioxidants, such as astaxanthin, often help to protect the skin from damage when taken as a daily supplement. It may take a few weeks for antioxidants or supplements to build up in your system, so plan accordingly when you expect to be in the sun for long periods of time. Use antioxidants in addition to sunscreen and protective clothing.
Moisturize the Skin
Moisturizer provides your body with metabolic benefits and helps to prevent dry and cracked skin. Apply organic coconut oil or moisturizer to the skin prior to sunbathing for added protection from the sun. Moisturizer does not serve as a substitute for sunscreen, but you can find sunscreens with added moisturizing agents that help boost the body's ability to ward off sunburns.
